23 EU countries still have covid restrictions for tourists

Although the situation with coronavirus has improved significantly and vaccination rates continue to rise, travel restrictions are still in place in most EU countries. However, these are not the tough measures that were in place in the early stages of the pandemic. And only 6 countries have removed anti-COVID measures when crossing the border.

Many countries in Europe still maintain a traffic light system and approach the issue of allowing tourists to the bloc countries for geographical reasons.
Here is a list of countries that still require that all travelers from abroad travelers presented a certificate of vaccination, recovery or testing upon entry. There are only 24 of them.

  1. Austria
  2. Belgium
  3. Bulgaria
  4. Germany
  5. Greece
  6. Denmark
  7. Spain
  8. Italy
  9. Cyprus
  10. Latvia
  11. Lithuania
  12. Luxembourg
  13. Malta
  14. Netherlands
  15. Poland
  16. Portugal
  17. Slovakia
  18. Finland
  19. France
  20. Croatia
  21. Czech Republic
  22. Switzerland: not part of the EU, but associated with Schengen and also applies anti-COVID entry measures.
  23. Sweden
  24. Estonia

Germany, Portugal and Poland are among the countries that apply different anti-covid rules to non-EU tourists. On the other hand, other countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Denmark and Finland make no distinction and apply the same rules to all travelers.

As a rule, all EU/Schengen countries allow entry without restrictions to all tourists who present a valid certificate of vaccination. Each bloc state has the right to establish its own rules regarding the validity of vaccination passes. However, most of them accept all vaccination certificates that prove that the owner has completed the primary vaccination with one of the approved vaccine doses within the last 270 days. Those who have been revaccinated are also allowed to enter the EU/Schengen area without restrictions.

EU countries are also allowing entry to travelers who have been ill with covid within the last 180 days. In addition, when traveling to the EU, tourists can present a negative test for COVID-19 – it will be accepted if it was issued only by a member state. This means that in most cases, tourists coming from third countries will not be able to enter based only on the result of a laboratory test, they must carry a certificate of vaccination or recovery with them in order to be exempted from additional entry rules.

Those however, there are certain exceptions:

  • Austriaallows entry to all travelers. To do this, you need to show one of three documents: a negative PCR test no older than 72 hours, a certificate of vaccination or confirmation of an infection. Thus, like EU citizens, travelers from third countries can also enter Austria by presenting a negative COVID-19 test result if they do not have a valid vaccination or recovery pass.
However, only proof of vaccination or past infection will be accepted for entry to any type of accommodation, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, theatres, or use of cable cars or ski lifts. A negative test for COVID-19 is not enough.
  • Italy is one of the countries that applies the same rules to all travelers, meaning that anyone can enter by presenting only one of the certificates , including a negative test result, regardless of country of origin.

Unlike the countries mentioned above, 6 member states of the bloc – Iceland, Norway, Slovenia, Romania, Hungary and Ireland – have already lifted their restrictions on COVID-19. This means that travelers can now enter these countries without having to comply with any special anti-COVID conditions. In addition, they are also exempt from internal measures when visiting these countries.
