Contrary to expectations: in Thailand, after the cancellation of the pandemic, tourists will be charged with the most hated duty

“Now the main issue is not control over the spread of the disease, but control over the behavior of people,” this is how Thai high-ranking medical officials explain the need to maintain the most unpleasant anti-COVID measure for tourists, namely, maintaining the mask regime. Although the number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand continues to decline and the National Committee on Communicable Diseases has begun talking about post-pandemic measures or extended preventive measures, the requirement for travelers to wear face masks will continue. This was announced by the Minister of Health Anutin Charnvirakul.

“Thanks to community collaboration and an increase in vaccinations, the number of new cases and deaths has fallen faster than predicted. The public health group held a meeting yesterday to discuss how to deal with Covid-19 after it was declared endemic,” the Thai health minister said. Although the country has practically reopened to tourists, Thailand has ditched pre-trip and on-arrival PCR tests for vaccinated travelers, and some 300,000 tourists have already visited the country since the Test & Go and Sandbox, having “brought in” no more than 10 cases of covid, no one plans to refuse to wear masks.

Moreover, the role of the mask regime is only underlined: “In order to limit the spread of Covid, the Department of Disease Control will take steps to encourage travelers to wear face masks,” the minister said. Thus, there is a chance that the mask mode will be the last one to go after the other restrictions – if it goes at all.

“Now the problem is not in controlling the disease, but in controlling people's behavior. We still need to encourage people to wear face masks,” officials say. They also continue to recommend avoiding recreational activities and, in fact, maintaining social distance.
