Outbound tourism from the Russian Federation in 2022 has halved compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, experts of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) have calculated.
Due to the conflict in Ukraine and Western sanctions, this year it is extremely difficult for Russians to leave countries abroad. That is why many have given up vacations at the usual European resorts.
As a result, only 3.5 million people (less than 3% of the population) left Russia for vacations abroad last summer. This is 50% less than in the same three months of 2019.
The vast majority of them (60%) went to Turkey. The fact is that this country is one of the few that has not severed, but has increased direct air communication with Russia. In addition, Turkey has traditionally developed a beach holiday, which is preferred by most guests from the Russian Federation.
Abkhazia (23%) was in second place, far behind. Russians go there by land via Sochi, often only for a few days.
The United Arab Emirates unexpectedly took the third place in the list (5%). Experts explain this by the fact that many fly to Dubai for only a couple of days, and then make a change and go to other countries.
