New trouble: tourists in Thailand have been asked to beware of dangerous mosquitoes

Immediately in four provinces in the north-east of Thailand, a new problem has been registered – an outbreak of a dangerous mosquito-borne dengue fever. In this regard, local residents and tourists were warned about safety measures against an acute viral disease. Most of those bitten are children between the ages of 10 and 14, Thai media reported. These are the provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphume, Buriram and Surin, where a total of 1,199 cases were detected.

Symptoms of a fever include headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, and a skin rash. The second name of the disease is “bone-breaking, joint fever” because of the severe pain in the joints that it can cause. Cases usually require hospitalization, and symptoms last 2-7 days on average. Sources of infection are sick people, monkeys and bats. The transmission of infection from a sick person is carried out by mosquitoes. In Thailand, two mosquito species can cause dengue fever: the yellow fever mosquito and the Asian tiger mosquito. Their main breeding grounds are earthenware vessels, metal barrels and concrete cisterns used to store domestic water supplies, as well as discarded plastic food containers.

Back in 2009, WHO classified dengue fever into two groups: uncomplicated and severe. In the first case, the prognosis is favorable, in the second, the mortality rate is 50%. There are four types of dengue virus, and the body can develop immunity to the strains it is exposed to. All four strains of dengue can be infected in one lifetime.

On March 31, the Office for Disease Prevention and Control detected the following number of cases in the provinces from January 1 to present:

  1. In Nakhon Ratchasima – 737 patients
  2. Chiyaphum – 223
  3. Buriram – 143
  4. Surin – 96

The highest number of cases were reported in Nakhon Ratchasima, mainly in Non Tai, Non Sun and Chokchai districts. The provincial health department was quick to reassure locals and tourists that the authorities are taking measures to contain the outbreak by fumigating Asian tiger mosquito breeding sites in the affected areas.
