The number of tourists visiting the resort city of Antalya by air in the period from January 1 to April 30 increased by 162 percent compared to 2021. At the same time, Russian tourists, who up to this point have always firmly occupied the first place in terms of the number of arrivals, for the first time slipped into third place. The leaders were the Germans and the British.
The weakening of the coronavirus epidemic contributed to the restoration of the tourism sector, and the events in Ukraine did not prevent the development of tourism. According to Turkish media, data from the Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism of Antalya province showed that the number of holidaymakers who arrived in the resort center of Turkey from the beginning of 2022 to the end of April exceeded one million, i.e. growth was 162 percent compared to last year's figures for the same period.
For comparison: in the first four months of 2022, the number of tourists visiting the city by plane significantly outstripped the covid 2020 and 2021. So, in the first four months of 2020, when the pandemic had already taken over the world, the number of travelers who arrived in the “capital” of Turkish tourism amounted to 431,769 people, in 2021 there were even fewer of them – 423,773 people, and this year – a record 1,112,383 people . At the end of April 2022, the figures are even more optimistic: the tourist flow increased by 286 percent compared to April 2021.
Antalya, which is one of the most important tourist centers in the Mediterranean, despite the situation around Ukraine, has successfully reoriented itself from the Russian tourist market to alternative ones. Since the beginning of the year, the largest number of tourists from Germany arrived in Antalya – 329,960 people. Great Britain followed Germany, bringing 150,944 tourists to the resorts of Antalya, and Russia closed the top three, with a record low figure of only 143,485 tourists. The main reasons are the beginning of the special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and the sanctions that followed this high-profile event. The other countries sending the most tourists to Antalya by air over a four-month period were the Netherlands, Poland, Iran, Israel, Lithuania, Kazakhstan and Belgium, respectively.
