It is too optimistic to expect a “boom” of tourists and even serious growth this summer, but there will be tourists in Turkey. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's speech after the latter's return from Brussels on the occasion of the Extraordinary Summit of NATO Heads of State and Government boiled down to such an encouraging message. The President assured the Turkish tourism industry that he had time to talk with all the heads of state, including about tourism – while one of the first he mentioned was not NATO representatives, but the Russian president.
“We will not put obstacles on the way of our citizens to Turkey,” – such a quote from Vladimir Putin was given by the President of Turkey. Erdogan also stressed that the Turkish Minister of Tourism “with great effort continues negotiations with countries on the issue of tourism.”
In connection with Russia, there was also talk of paying in rubles. “Maybe for us it will be a way out in terms of money if we start working with our national currency. We have already proposed this to Russia: we can do it with rubles and Turkish lira. Let's make it work,” the Turkish president said. He also recalled that an average of 5 million tourists a year arrived from Russia to Turkey. And Turkey expects to receive this amount.
In addition to Russia, President Erdogan named Poland, Great Britain and Germany among the promising markets. He said that he had held relevant negotiations with Polish President Andrzej Duda, who, in his words, “advises Polish tourists to go to Turkey”, as well as with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and representatives of Great Britain.
