While some Russians are moving en masse to Turkey and applying for a residence permit (for details, read the article “The migration of Russians to Antalya has taken on an avalanche character: there is not enough housing, there are a lot of cars with Russian numbers on the streets of the resort”), others cannot escape from it. Currently, about 3,000 Russian tourists leave the resorts of the main province of Antalya due to the embargo imposed on Russia, which came after the start of a special operation in Ukraine.
It is specified that at present there are from two to three thousand tourists from Russia in Antalya, who were sent on vacation by the following tour operators: Pegas, Coral, ANEX, Sun&Fun (TUI Russia). According to publications, since the beginning of the events in Ukraine, travelers who remained in the republic due to flight cancellations have been placed in hotels. Many of them continue to remain there today. However, Turkish tourism is ringing as the beach season approaches, hotels need to be put in order and hotel rooms need to be vacated for paying tourists.
Russian civil aviation came under sanctions after the events of February 24 and the threat of confiscation of aircraft, so it cannot yet spread its wings and take Russians home. A similar situation has developed not only in Antalya, but also in many countries of the world. For example, in Egypt, Thailand, Sri Lanka.
According to Turkish tourism media, representatives of the tourism sector reported that Russian tour operators requested permission from the authorities to launch their own aircraft and evacuate passengers, but Russia did not agree, since Turkey did not provide any guarantees that, having arrived at their destination, the planes would not be confiscated .
Another way to return Russian tourists home is to take a Turkish Airlines flight.
“Russian tour operators cannot fly even on their own planes, because Turkey does not give any guarantees. Another option for exporting Russians is Turkish Airlines. The airline is asking 1'000 euros for a one way ticket. The carrier must provide tour operators with an affordable price to evacuate passengers stranded here,” a source in the aviation sector told Turkish publications.
Only five countries guaranteed the Russian government that Russian aircraft could land safely on their territory and would not be confiscated. These are Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina, Kyrgyzstan and Sri Lanka.
To assess the seriousness of the situation and assess further risks, we add that 78 aircraft have already been arrested in foreign countries and will not return to Russia. At the same time, almost 800 out of more than 1,300 aircraft have already been transferred to the Russian aviation register. Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev reported about this at a meeting of the Committee on Economic Policy under the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament.
